Volnay Santenots1er cru

Domaine Pierre Morey

- Wine 赤
  • Classification : 1er cru
  • Area (ha) : 0.35
  • Average year of plantation : 1974
  • Grape variety : Pinot Noir
We bought this vineyard at the end of 2003 in lieu-dit Les Pétures, in the North of Meursault (even if the name is VOLNAY Santenots, this premier cru is completely produced in the Meursault area).
Located in the middle of the slope, the parcel is very well protected from the wind. Soils are rather shallow, very red and have a very delicate structure which is easy to work (ploughing,...)
From 1999 to 2003 included, Volnay Santenots was produced under the Morey-Blanc label. Beginning with the 2004 harvest, it is a biodynamic wine from Domaine Pierre MOREY. Allying finesse and elegance, is velvety (soft in the mouth) and heady, Volnay Santenots is a relatively rich wine.

Decanter – Charles Curtis 94 pts 2023 July

“The Volnay Santenots from Domaine Pierre Morey is a delightful wine with a deep ruby colour, bright, ripe cherry fruit with floral notes and a savoury, gamey edge. the texture is fresh, with firm tannins and a rewardingingly long finish. the grapes are from 0.34 ha in Plures, next to the vines of the Hospices. However, a third of this is now replanted, leaving only 18 ares. The soil is very stony here, although this version lacks the density and power of some wines from Santenots du Milieu, it has its own charm and should age well.”

Inside Burgundy – Jasper Morris 87-89 pts 2024 January

“Rich purple with a crimson edge, some blood orange, quite ripe dark fruit, probably enough to cover the tannins. Then comes a drier finish, this is on the edge, reminiscent of the less successful wines in 2020.”

VINOUS Antonio Galloni – Neal Martin 2020-10 89-91 pts

“The 2019 Volnay Les Santenots 1er Cru has a really beautiful bouquet of pure dark cherry and boysenberry fruit that bursts from the glass. The palate is tight and less expressive than the nose, but there is certainly good depth and grip. The muscular finish suggests that this will need 3–4 years in bottle. “

Burgundy Report – Bill Nanson 2019-12

From Les Plures near the vines of the Hospices.
Hmm – a super nose again, another tiny step forward, also a modest but fine floral note too! Fuller, more layered delivery of flavour – not much less structure but this is hyper-successful this year – bravo !

Robert Parker Wine Advocate – William Kelley 2019-11   91-93 pts

More reserved than the exuberant Volnay Pitures from Maison Morey-Blanc, the domaine’s 2018 Volnay 1er Cru Les Santenots unwinds to reveal notes of cherries, plums, burning embers, sweet soil tones and spices. Medium to fullbodied, it’s muscular and nicely concentrated, with powdery tannins and chalky grip on the finish.

Special Report 2018 Burgundy Scores – Tim Atkin 2019-10   92 points

Robert Parker Wine Advocate – William Kelley 2018-10   88-91 pts

The 2017 Volnay 1er Cru Les Santenots is a definite success, displaying attractive aromas of plums, wild berries, dried flowers and a judicious framing of creamy new oak. On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied, ample and satiny, with nice depth and dimension at the core, tangy balancing acids and a pleasing sense of completeness. It’s a charming Santenots that will drink well in its youth.

Burgundy Report – Bill Nanson 2018-10

From Les Plures near the vines of the Hospices.
“More floral if a little less aromatic impact today. More structured and open – a more architectural volume. Slowly melting flavour. Intense in the finish. Less easy than the Monthelie – a more three-dimensional wine – but this is my favourite.”

BETTANE ET DESSEAUVE Guide 2019

17/20 –  “Dégusté sur fût, des notes fleuries et épicées, la bouche est enjôleuse en attaque, une finale séveuse et terrienne. “

Burgundy Report – Bill Nanson 2016-11

“Big, fresh and spicy, large scaled but not rich – intense mid-palate flavour, if a hint more oak here. A broad and impressive  line of flavour going into the finish – what a greet set of reds !”

BETTANE ET DESSEAUVE

16/20 –  “Notes de fruits noirs et d’épices au nez, ensemble plein de sève, charnu mais un rien revêche, fait pour la garde, sans concession.“

WINE ADVOCATE – Robert PARKER

90-92 points

BETTANE ET DESSEAUVE

17/20 –  “Nez qui fait saliver, on sent une belle densité, le tannin est soyeux et s’’étire de la façon la plus subtile.“

Burghound.com – Allen Meadows

90-92 – “This is elegant with a lightly spiced nose of violets, plums and cassis plus nuances of earth and stone. There is excellent richness to the generous and mouth coating medium-bodied flavors that are shaped by a firm but ripe tannic spice that culminates in a delicious, balanced and seriously persistent finish. This will require the better part of a decade to arrive at its apogee.”

Bourgogne Aujourd’hui – Janvier 2012   16/20

“Nez complexe sur les fruits noirs bien mûrs. La bouche est dense et pleine, avec une belle longueur.”

WINE ENTHUSIAST – March 2008

92 points –  “There is a delicious richness here, balanced with acidity and firm tannins.”

BETTANE & DESSEAUVE 2008

15.5/20 – “Nouvelle acquisition du domaine : vin coloré, dense…assez terrien.”
