- Grape variety : Pinot Noir
Blending of these vineyards (slope and gentle-slope) produces a charming wine which is soft in the mouth from its youth. In addition to the beautiful expression of red fruits, there is a good tannin balance, which suggests that these wines will taste best if aged from 5 to 8 years, in most vintages.
Tasting notes
“The 2022 Monthelie rouge has a lifted, well-defined bouquet with cranberry and wild strawberry, quite ripe and fleshy without being overbearing. Just generous. The palate is medium-bodied with filigree tannins. It’s extremely elegant with piquant red fruit and a little spice on the finish. What a superb Monthelie from Anne Morey.”
“A solid mid purple. The nose is very engaging, raspberry fruit supported by some plums. Good acidity, the tannins are balanced, quite long. This shows promise, especially compared to some Monthelies tasted elsewhere which have seemed to be below par.”

“An ultra fresh nose is comprised by notes of plum, dark cherry and more prominent earth influence. The delicious and vibrant if not especially dense flavors terminate in a bitter pit fruit-inflected finish that is also sneaky long. This is noticeably firmer and a wine that should benefit from at least a few years of patience.”
VINOUS Antonio Galloni – Neal Martin 2021-10 86-88 pts
“The 2020 Monthelie rouge had been racked the previous week. It has a generous floral bouquet with crushed violet and iris flower combined with black cherries and blueberry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with supple, quite fleshy blue fruit, perhaps just needing a little more grip on the finish.”

“Clearly a more perfumed fruit – still darker – like the colour of the wine – but a fine invitation. Silken, mobile, accessible. Beautiful shape. Great villages – bravo! The only red under 15° here – still 14.5° but grand…”
“The 2019 Monthélie Rouge comes from seven parcels in five different climats. It has a delightful red cherry and blueberry bouquet that is very floral in style. The palate is well balanced with succulent blue fruit, light spicy notes and a smooth, harmonious finish. Worth seeking out because it’s delicious.”
The Wine Advocate – William Kelley 2021-01 90 pts
“Offering up aromas of sweet berries, cassis and forest floor, the 2019 Monthélie is medium to full-bodied, bright and velvety, its generous core of fruit underpinned by lively acids and framed by beautifully refined tannins. It’s another lovely rendition of this under-the-radar cuvée.”

waiting to bottle.
“This nose is quite high-toned, round, cushioned and really inviting. Mouth-filling, concentrated, slowly opening, equally slowly mouth-watering. Depth of luscious flavour. Lower energy but high on tasty flavour.”
Burghound.com – Allen Meadows 2021 – Issue 82
87-89 – “Here there is a whiff of mocha on the slightly jammy aromas of black berry fruit and discret anise wisps. There is exceptionally good richness to the sappy, round and palate drenching flavors that conclude in a lingering if slightly warm finale.”
The 2018 Monthélie is showing beautifully, bursting with notes of cherries, raspberries and sweet forest floor. Medium to full-bodied, lively and incisive, its bright spine of acidity and chalky tannins cloaked in a rich core of fruit, this is well worth seeking out and confirms Anne Morey’s considerable talents as a red winemaker.
Pretty and expressive, the 2017 Monthélie is showing well from bottle, bursting with aromas of cherries, wild berries and rich soil tones. Mediumbodied, lively and fine-boned, it concludes with elegantly chalky back-end grip.
Burgundy Report – Bill Nanson 2018-10
Multiple climats, new oak a little over 25%.
“Despite the extra oak in elevage this wine is less obviously oaked and more lithe and silky versus the Bourgogne – aromatically and in the mouth too. Lovely volume in the mid and finishing flavours. Delicious.”
VINOUS Antonio Galloni – Neal Martin 2019-01
“The 2017 Monthelie village, which sees just around 30% new oak, has a pretty bilberry and raspery scented bouquet. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy red berry fruit, but quite reduced towards the finish that just needs a little more detail to come trough.”
Decanter – Tim Atkin 2018-10 91 pts
“Anne Morey is rightly regarded as a white specialist, but she also makes some very enjoyable reds. This aromatic medium-weight village Monthelie is a case in point, showing subtle, floral, engagingly pretty aromas of strawberry tart and vanilla spice with a tangy, refreshing finish.”
BETTANE ET DESSEAUVE Guide 2017
16.5/20 – “Assemblage de parcelles différentes, nez complexe, très intéressant. La bouche est ronde, gourmande, tendre et énergique. ”
“Ooh, what delicious impression to this nose ! Depth, fruit of fine purity and complexity – bravo – almost a hint of attractive smoke. Simply brilliant, concentrated, delicious wine, again with a fine juicy finish. Great !”
“The Morey family quietly produces some of the best Monthelie around… Lovely, pure, crunchy Pinot fruit leads into a supple, juicy wine with a lovely core of juicy fruit and chalky minerality.” 91 points

“A beautiful nose, floral, fresh but still of ripe fruit. A silkiness to the aromatic. Complex, generous and fresh at the same time – simply gorgeous wine – bravo ! A super finish too, here for the first time you might note a faint texture of tannin.”
A really beautiful nose. High and low tones. Floral with a weight of perfume. Really good volume in the mouth, fine flavour, a little minerality, and a little ripple of tannin in the mid-palate, then freshly finishing.”
BETTANE ET DESSEAUVE Guide 2017
14/20 – “Ce vin s’avère aimable, déjà accessible, dans une chair ample, crayeuse, à la trame vive et sèveuse, qui devrait s’arrondir encore dans les deux à trois ans qui viennent.”
WEIN PUR – Gerhard Mayr 08/2016
“Charmante, helle kirschige Nase.
88 -“There is quite fresh and slightly riper with dark berry fruit aromas that include plum and cassis along with floral and earth hints. There is good volume and excellent precision to the energectic and, ever-so-midly rustic flavors that deliver fine length on the balanced finish. Solid quality at this level.”
BETTANE ET DESSEAUVE
14.5/20 – “Des arômes de cassis, un léger boisé de lélevage, une belle matière.“
