The Italian doctor, Augustino Mazzoli, astonished by the beauty of the town of Beaune, decided to set up home there and became one of the first doctors of the Hôtel-Dieu, practising until his death in 1505. One of his descendants, whose name was made french, the magistrate Jéhan de Massol bequeated upon his death in 1669 a collection of works of art.
Since its foundation during 15th Century by Nicolas Rolin and his wife Guigone de Salins, the Hospital has beenfunded by legacies and gifts ; and became a beautiful vineyard estate. From 1859, the wines of the Hospices are sold by auction to improve the new hospital and keep the old buidings like « Hôtel-Dieu ».
