Monthelie 1er cru1er cru
Domaine Pierre Morey
- Wine Red- Classification : 1er cru
- Area (ha) : 0.14
- Average year of plantation : 1965
- Grape variety : Pinot noir
Starting with a stony clay and chalk soil, the slope becomes more and more white marls in the upper side. This is a good confirmation to the ancestor’s intuition for the best terroirs.
Notes de dégustation
“Forward, floral, with a more stony impression below – perhaps a hint darker fruit – lovely perfume. In the mouth fine intensity and a hint more architectural in style – a very pretty finish. Faintly spiced, lovely wine !”
Inside Burgundy – Jasper Morris 89-92 pts 2024 January
“This comes from a tiny plot on white soil in Les Clous. Full mid purple with a perfectly balanced concentration of fruit, just on the cusp of red and black. A powerful intensity, a couple of tannins, fine acidity too and a long finish.”
Below Santenots, deeper soil, flatter land. We rarely have such roundness in this cuvée.
“Deeply fruited, faintly reductive. Wider, more incisive, lovely texture with a suggestion of tannin but no grain. Less overtly sweet after the Monthelie. A delicious finish – that’s completely lovely !”
Only second time made separately as a small parcel so has usually gone into the villages.
“More aromatic width and a little more saline. All destemmed. Fuller, some peppery width to a fine complexity, long, this is excellent.”
VINOUS Antonio Galloni – Neal Martin 2019-01
“The 2017 Monthelie 1er cru is a cru that debuted in 2015 (there was no in 2016) and comes from Les Clous, though this not on the label as Anne Morey told me that it will hopefully be augmented with another 1er cru in the future. It has an attractive raspberry and cranberry scented bouquet. The palate is well balanced with crisp tannin, the white soils mparting a sense of strictness for a Monthelie but with decent minéralité on the finish. Very fine.Ywo and a half barrel only.”
Robert Parker Wine Advocate – William Kelley 2018-10 90 pts
Deeper and more serious, the 2017 Monthélie 1er Cru wafts from the glass with notes of ripe berry fruit, peonies, cinnamon and forest floor. Medium to full-bodied, lively and precise, with a sweet core of fruit and chalky structuring tannins, it’s a classic example of the appellation.
“Also floral, deeper too, slightly narrower. A little whole cluster here. More complexity, a hint more structure and muscle. Fine bubbly complexity. Also really excellent wine and it will need a hint more time, but super all the same.”
Decanter Magazine – William Kelley 2016-10
“A mere two barrels of this wine were bottled separately for the first time in 2015, but in 2016 quantities are so small the Les Clous will be blended into the village Monthelie. Though the wine’s DNA is the same, the 1er cru cuvée is more complete and rich than the village bottling, with a fragrant bouquet of red cherry and rose and an elegant, detailed palate impression.” 91 points
